The Seattle Mariners (67-57) defeated the New York Yankees (63-61), 7-5, at Safeco Field late Monday night in the first of three-game series with possible playoff implications, despite another impressive game for phenom rookie-catcher Gary Sanchez.
Coming into the game, the Mariners and Yankees were both within five games of a spot in the wild-card game, behind the Toronto Blue Jays and Boston Red Sox who are currently tied for both the AL East and first spot for the AL wild-card race, according to MLB.com.

The Mariners, who have been the MLB’s best team since the All Star break, pull to within one game of the AL wild card with the win. The Yankees, despite the loss, are still well within striking distance at five games back, with just under 40 games left in the regular season.

Gary Sanchez became the first Yankees catcher to win the American League Player of the Week award since Thurman Munson last week, hitting for a .524 batting average with four home runs in six games. He showed no signs of slowing down in the Monday night loss to the Mariners as he belted his seventh and eighth home runs of the season, leading the league in the category since August 10, according to YES Network.

Sanchez’s first home run was a solo-shot in the top of the first inning after Brett Gardner and Jacoby Ellsbury were retired by Blue Jays starting pitcher Cody Martin. Starlin Castro, who also hit two home runs in the loss, led off the top of the second inning with another solo-shot to help get the Yankees off to a fast start in a crucial series.

Michael Pineda strung together three-shutout innings before allowing the Mariners’ first runs in a crazy bottom of the fourth inning. With runners on first-and-third and no outs, Pineda got Seattle right fielder Nelson Cruz to ground to third baseman, then Chase Headley passed up the double play in order to get Seth Smith out in a rundown between third and home, giving the Yankees a chance to escape another inning unscathed. Pineda then fell behind 3-0 to Mariners third baseman Kyle Seager before throwing a fastball over the middle of the plate, that Seager clobbered over the center field wall to give the Mariners their first lead of the game.

Sanchez and Castro both hit their second home runs of the game in the top of the sixth, giving the Yankees their lead back briefly.

With two outs and runners on first and second, the Yankees manager replaced the left-handed Tommy Lane with right-handed pitcher Anthony Swarzak in order to get a favorable match-up with Mike Zunino, but the decision backfired. Zunino drove a pitch just over the right-field fence for a three-run home run that put Seattle back on top 6-5.

After Nelson Cruz hit his 32nd home run of the season to extend the Mariners’ lead to 7-5, Steve Cishek was able to retire the middle of the Yankees line-up 1-2-3 in the bottom of the eighth – setting up young closing pitcher Edwin Diaz for his tenth straight save of the season.
